Each day there many times when you are just standing still, in an elevator, for example, or waiting in line. I recommend that you use these downtimes as an opportunity to visualize your muscles, your posture, and your breathing. This heightened awareness will help you improve your fitness level even when you're not formally exercising.
I call this technique, "Innercize Visualization."
There are so many times in the course of the day that we inadvertently hold our breath. To offset this tendency, as soon as you become aware that you are doing this, stop for a moment, breathe deeply and allow your body to relax. It's amazing how much stress we build up without realizing we are doing it. Reminding yourself to take deep breaths throughout the day will help you release some of that stored-up tension.
You can even practice this Innercize Visualization awareness and self-observation exercise to improve your musculature while going through your regular day's activities. Use the opportunity, like when waiting in line, to tighten your buttocks and abdomen, lift your rib cage, and straighten up. This inner tightening and lifting will give you an immediate sense of lightness.
When you get accustomed to using Innercize Visualization to "see" how the parts of your body are working, you can turn waiting time into mini-exercise sessions. Whenever you're waiting to cash a check or buy some groceries, stop to think about what's happening in your body.
Throughout the day and during your routine activities you can ongoingly monitor and quickly catch yourself if you are becoming unconscious and unaware of your body. If you find yourself drooping, slumping or tense -- slow down, breathe deeply, lift yourself up, using your Innercize Visualization exercise. You'll be amazed at how energizing these seemingly small actions can be.
