Depression is a condition that affects a large number of people at some point in their lives. It can result in sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest in activities, and negatively impact relationships. There are instances where depression is severe enough to merit a pharmaceutical approach. However, frequently a case of the blues can be addressed using a natural approach. Here are 4 natural ways to alleviate the symptoms of depression::
1. Eat healthy, high protein foods.Depression often affects appetite. Some people lose their appetites and find a full meal an overwhelming prospect. If that is the case, try carrying around or making available nutritious, high protein snacks.Jerky and nuts are a good choice -- almonds or cashews are a better choice than peanuts. If you have the opposite problem and tend to comfort eat or overeat, make sure you aren't eating while distracted, i.e. in front of the tv.Some people find setting a cut off time in the evening for eating is helpful as well.
2. Take natural supplements.Along with food based multivitamins and calcium, try taking fish oil. Also, you can try L-Theanine, which is an anti-anxiety supplement that comes in both spray and capsule form. You may also concurrently take it with 5 HTP (hydroxytryptophan), an antidepressant and a precursor to the brain neurotransmitter serotonin, which affects mood regulation.
3. Adopt an exercise program.Get your doctor's approval before beginning any exercise regimen.Develop a routine based on your fitness level. The ideal type of exercise for the alleviation of depression is cardiovascular in nature. What you want are activities that raise your heart rate for a sustained period of time, releasing the "feel good" endorphins through your system.Ideally, you will work up to 45 minutes of sustained cardio exercise 5 times per week, but any exercise is better than nothing.Just get moving.
4. Find a counselor, a support team, and adopt other methods of self care.Often, talking out problems you are struggling with is an important way of resolving them.A professional counselor is ideal, as they are properly trained to offer good advice and are more unbiased in their approach.Trusted friends and family can also help offer you advice and perspective.Try doing small things for yourself each day that you enjoy.Taking care of yourself, even in small ways, helps you to feel better and increase your self esteem.
