Some studies indicate that one percent, or one out of every ten people suffer from chronic fatigue. Studies also indicate that women are more likely to be affected by chronic fatigue than men.
Although fatigue or tiredness is a common occurrence resulting from lack of, or interrupted sleep, it usually corrects itself after a night or two of good sleep.
However, some people suffer from long -term fatigue that seems to find no relief. These people just seem to drag through life with no energy. Additional symptoms are daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, depression, and lack of motivation.
Chronic Fatigue Causes
Studies indicate that only nine or ten percent of cases are the result of physical causes, but 75% of cases are the result of emotional causes.Stress is often the cause of feelings of fatigue.
Physical causes include:
Being overweight which causes the body to have to work harder to perform normal activities.
Being underweight also can cause feelings of fatigue or tiredness because lack of muscle strength may cause you to tire more quickly.
Other conditions that can contribute to feelings of excessive tiredness or chronic fatigue are underactive thyroid, asthma, anemia, insomnia, sleep apnea, stress, depression, and financial or family worries. Especially for women, taking care of small children can cause fatigue.
Treatment for chronic fatigue or excessive tiredness:
Cut back on, or eliminate drinking caffeinated beverages - especially prior to bed time.
Try to refrain from taking daytime naps that will keep you from sleeping well at night.
Lose weight if you are overweight.
Exercise with resistance training to develop more muscle tone if you are underweight.
Try to remove worries and anxiety from your mind prior to bed time.
Eat a well balance diet.
Get plenty of exercise like walking. Physical exercise actually invigorates the body.Being unfit makes you feel tired.
Use relaxation techniques. Often tiredness results from being "keyed up" with no outlet for the feelings.
