Make Your Own Natural Sunscreen

Summer is about having fun in the sun, but nowadays we have to protect our skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays. We undoubtedly need some sort of sunscreen, but do we have to use something with chemicals that are neither beneficial to us or the environment. Here is a very simple way to make your own natural sunscreen at home. Keep in mind with the lack of ozone there really is no "safe" tan, however if you decide to not be a hermit this will definitely help like any other sunscreen.

The first ingredient you will need for this sunscreen is olive oil, or you can experiment with different kinds of oil that are safe for your skin like vitamin E rich avocado oil. Next you will need beeswax and zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, both should be available at many natural stores or online. Titanium dioxide works a bit better albeit somewhat harder to find. Either one is the "active" ingredient and is what actually protects you. The beeswax is what holds the oxide evenly throughout the sunscreen. You can change the ratio of wax to oil to your liking as well.

What you will need:

1 Cup olive oil or any natural oil

1 Ounce pure beeswax

2 Tablespoons pure (USP grade) zinc oxide or titanium dioxide

Directions:

1. Heat the oil in a pan over low flame.

2. Add crumbled beeswax.

3. Keep stirring until the beeswax is completely melted.

4. While stirring add the zinc oxide or titanium dioxide slowly.

5. Carefully pour into a glass or ceramic container that can be covered.

6. Once cooled, its ready for application.

A couple precautions should be taken. First of all avoid breathing either the powdered zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as it may be a health risk. Second it might be a good idea to dedicate a particular pan, spoon, and any other utensils used for this purpose only, no longer to make food. Lastly, when applying, make sure the oxide has not settled during cooling. If the sunscreen looks translucent, stir up the oxide to get that opaque color.

Hope this provides an alternative to the chemical-laden sunscreens. It is a small step towards not using chemical products while, not to mention, saving some green in the process. And please remember that sunscreen is not a complete solution for the suns rays and is not an unlimited time in the sun pass.

1. Start small - A plot that is 4 feet wide and 4 to 10 feet long is small enough to manage and big enough to grow quite a lot of vegetables. You can use containers if you don't have ground to grow in. Containers can be an advantage; you can control the quality of your soil and the amount of moisture and sunlight. Just be sure they are at least a foot deep or more to keep most vegetables happy.

2. Ask the pros- If you live in the U.S. we have a wonderful free resource called Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners are volunteers who work for the County Extension and staff phone lines to answer your questions about gardening and pests in your local area. Look them up in the 'county' section of the blue government section of your white pages. In addition to any gardening questions you have, ask them for one best resource book to buy for your local area.

3. Buy a book- Buy at least 1 good reference book for gardening in your area. In the western U.S. it is the Sunset Book of Western Gardening.

4. Plants need to eat too- Fertilize organically. My favorite method is with compost tea. Compost tea is just what it sounds like; tea brewed from compost. I have a great local organic/hydroponics store that has compost tea available every Saturday free of charge. Call some stores in your area to see if someone near you does the same thing. My second favorite organic fertilizer is chicken manure.

5. Control Pests- Many pests can be controlled by handpicking or spraying with a stream of water to knock them off. Horticultural oils and soaps can also be used to deter pests and keep your food pesticide free.

Growing your own food is fun and satisfying. The vegetables tend to taste better and you know they are healthy since you know what you did or did not put on them. Some of the simplest to grow are salad greens such as leaf lettuce, Swiss chard and arugula, as well as tomatoes, beets, carrots, squash and beans.

Soils, the Natural Solution

Any soil type-clay, sand or loam-will benefit from the addition of organic matter. In a clay soil, the addition of organic matter opens up the tightly packed particles, allowing for water and air to penetrate easier. In a sandy soil, organic mater adds nutrients and body to the soil, improving its capacity to hold water.

Loam is what is considered the ideal soil. The addition of organic matter will keep it in the best shape, attracting worms into your soil and keeping it rich and healthy.

So what sort of organic matter is best? Any and lots of it. Manure, straw, hay and compost.

When it comes to manure, unlike vegetables, fresh is not best. Fresh manure might not do much harm to your soil but it can burn or kill your plants.
Be especially careful of fresh chicken manure, let it age for at least 12 months to let out some of the ammonia and uric acid. Also be careful of applying large amounts of chicken manure to sandy soil, as it can possibly cause potassium toxicity.

Personally, I like cow manure and horse manure. They are milder and have a greater amount of fibrous material in them.

If you are collecting the manure yourself, check with the owner that the manure making machines havent been wormed recently, as parasitic worming chemicals not only kill intestinal worms, but kill the good old, hard working garden worms as well.

Straw and hay are normally used as mulch before they are dug into the soil after they decompose somewhat. This is the best way to use straw and hay and you get two uses for the one price.

Most straws and hay add little or no nutrient value into the soil, but are great for improving soil structure. If you got for pea straw or lucerne hay, both of these have the benefit of adding nitrogen as well as structure.

Compost is probably the best addition of all, with the bonus that you can make it yourself. It has already decomposed, so there is no temporary lock up of the nutrients or minerals in the soil while it breaks down. It doesnt matter if it is home made or store bought, just keep adding it to the soil year after year.

In stores, you are likely to come across two types of compost-garden mix and mushroom. Garden mix compost is usually fairly neutral as gar as the pH goes, but mushroom compost tends to be on the alkaline side, so should be avoided in beds that contain acid loving plants like azaleas and camellias. Also avoid it if our soil is highly alkaline naturally.

When you feed your plants, keep in mind the organic fertilisers made from a mixture of manure, bone meal, straw and hay. They not only feed your plants a balanced diet of the essential nutrients and minerals, they will also benefit the soil structure as they break down. Where as chemical fertilisers give no benefit to the soil, and often give a harsh, sudden feed, leading to soft growth that is delectable to insect pests.
Worm castings are another great organic addition and are a brilliant way to recycle your kitchen scraps.

A worm farm is easier, quicker and more practical for many people over composting and you wont end up with a pile of sludge or rock hard rubble if you get the layering, watering or aeration wrong.

Organic matter is the way to go if you want to improve your soil. There are chemical alternatives that will give you a quick fix for a limited time, but a natural solution is best to get your soil up to scratch and keep it that way.

Can Natural Progesterone Replace HRT?

HRT or Hormone Replacement Therapy is a somewhat controversial treatment option for menopausal women. Many experts believe that HRT is actually unsafe. It is a synthetic treatment, in other words it is not natural. Whilst some women see positive effects to HRT treatment, others find the long term risks or side effects are not worth it and these women often seek a natural treatment such as natural progesterone.

When HRT is used for long periods of time, as it often is, it is thought to be unsafe to the body. HRT usually involves taking a combined hormonal supplement of both estrogen and progestin. Accentuating Your Child's Natural Abilities

Not every child will be a sports super star or even a National champion. Deep down parents realize this but still, as they say, hope springs eternal for our children. Having said this now is the time to help the young trainee make logical choices in how they train.

Some children show potential to run distances while others seem better suited to sprints or feats of strength. There are a limited number of children with the genetic make up to excel in these widely varying activities. One is clearly aerobic whereas the other leans more toward the anaerobic type of training.

Spending lots of time trying to get a child to run long distances when they are better suited to becoming strong and powerful will cause frustrations for both parties. In fact, pushing in this direction can actually weaken the potential of the child to get strong and powerful. Assuming desire is at the same level for both of them, in the long run, they will never reach the same levels as the one who has the genetic makeup to run long distances. This has nothing to do with their desire but instead to the fact their body is not built to run long distances. There are too many fast twitch fibers compared to the runners' slow twitch make up.

A person who is naturally anaerobicaly strong will be at a distinct disadvantage to one who is naturally aerobic in makeup.

The crux of all this is to follow this principle of training and exercise program design:

Accentuate the positive and eliminate the negatives by working on those parts of the skills, movements and physical conditioning qualities that are behind in the learning curve. Keep in mind that constant negative harping on the lagging parts will become a sore spot for the child. It won't take long before they'll be less inclined to continue with their training.

Helping a child to maintain their motivation to work out means emphasizing their natural abilities; the ones they excel in and which make them happy at the same time. After all, every one of us wants to be good at something and physical activities are no different from the rest.

A child who enjoys exercising will more than likely remain engaged in vigorous physical activities for the rest of their lives.

    2. Draw imaginary "eights", you have to do it with your nose but move your head too.
