Chronic muscle spasm can lead to the following problems:
- Headaches. Tension in the scalp is the cause of the common tight-band headache. Neck and shoulder tension can cause a dull ache around the base of the skull, and a feeling of being only partially present or depressed.
- Neck and shoulder tension. The neck is the pathway to the head. If the neck and shoulder muscles are tight, the circulation to the head is restricted. It's like putting a tight cord around your neck. This can cause the following: Dizziness, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, sinus problems
- Backaches. When the muscles on the sides of the neck are tense, the position of the head is altered. This transfers the tension all the way down the spine, resulting in back problems.
- Wobbly legs. If the spine is out of alignment, the legs do not work properly and you feel as if your legs can't hold you up.
- Shaking. When the body is geared for action and the action is not taken, shaking often occurs. Shaking expends unused energy.
- Tight chest. When the chest feels tight, it is usually the result of over-breathing.
- Loss of interest in sex. Every system in the body can be disrupted by frayed nerves, so it would be surprising if the hormones were not affected. In addition, with so much energy going into tension, and the body trying to balance on a spine that is being pulled in all directions, there may not be enough energy left for sex. Fear also causes loss of libido.
- Insomnia. When you understand what is going on in your body, you will see that insomnia is an inevitable physiological result of what you are doing to your body and mind during the day. Like panic attacks, insomnia is not a mysterious condition over which you have no control.
