Is your body hurting and exhausted after a long triathlon race or day of training? Let me share with you some tips for triathlon recovery that will have your body feeling refreshed in no time.
When you are on a strict triathlon training schedule you don't want to waste too much time between training sessions so it is important to take care of yourself so you don't have to time too much time off when you need to recover.
1. Stretching - This sounds like a no brainer. You would actually be surprised at how many triathletes don't properly stretch after a race or training session. You want to perform static stretching and avoid bouncing while you stretch. The more flexible you are the more fluid your range of motion will be. This will not only save your muscles, it will also help you get better time in your triathlon races.
2. Massage -Sports massages are a great way to keep blood flow to your muscles. Not only is it a nice relaxing way to unwind, it helps your body recover quite nicely. Make sure to really focus on your legs and feet. You want to keep them in tip top condition.
3. Get Some Sleep - Make sure to get at least 6 1/2 hours of sleep every night to give your body ample opportunity to repair muscles and recover from your workouts and races. This is the time where most triathlon recovery takes place so don't cut it short.
4. Kick Your Legs Up - Lay down on the couch and elevate your legs while watching some TV. You want to keep them up for about 5 minutes per hour you worked out. So if you spent 4 hours training or racing you will want to keep your legs elevated for about 20 minutes.
5. Eat Better - Avoid foods that put a toll on your system. Stay away from meat during your training and racing season. Eat a lot of fruits, veggies and carbohydrates.
