Soccer, also know as football in many parts of the world, is generally accepted as The World's Game, The People's Game, The Beautiful Game! It is followed and played all over the world, from professionals paid huge sums of money in front of adoring fans and watched by millions all over the world, to poor impoverished children on a piece of scrub land. After all, all you need is a ball. And that ball can sometimes be just about anything you can kick about.
But if you are interested in playing soccer well, you don't just need a ball, you also need to look after your soccer fitness, you need to train and you need to constantly practice to develop your soccer skills. Even the most famous of players, like those I allude to above, still have to maintain their fitness, train and improve their skills. The players we all watch on the television like Gerrard, Beckham, Ronaldo, Rooney, Ronaldinho, Kaka etc. don't just turn up 10 minutes before a game, get changed, run out onto the pitch and off they go.
The levels of fitness in the professional game now are unparalleled, the level of skill always increasing. The professional soccer player will spend hours upon hours honing their fitness and skills. They are always trying to improve. That is why they are champions!
Although soccer is not as nearly as physical a game like American football or rugby, it is still not a game to take lightly. If you want to play soccer well you will have to run around the pitch constantly for 90 minutes, throw yourself into tackles and do everything you can to help your team win. To do that and more, you need to be fit, very fit.
Whether you are a seasoned pro, play for your local club, pub team or have never played before and are looking at starting, you must still make that sacrifice and spend a little bit of time on a regular basis to get into shape and stay there. Of course, just because you know you are supposed to do this isn't going to make much difference unless you understand exactly what must be done to achieve it. And then, even more importantly, you must put it into action.
