It's always exciting when you have created a new website and published it for the first time on the internet. You're excited how much money it could make and you desperately want to start building links so that it gets lots of free search engine traffic. However it's very important that you focus on building links naturally.
Search engine optimization is all about building links slowly and steadily so that in the long term you have a website that's getting thousands of visitors from Google and the other major search engines. It is definitely not a short-term process.
The worst thing you can do is to put your website on the internet and then go about building hundreds or even thousands of backlinks straight away. Although this may get you high search engine rankings in the first couple of weeks or so, you will soon find that these rankings drop away again pretty sharply.
Think about how this influx of links appears to the search engines. To them it appears that you are gaming the search engines, which is in effect what you have been doing, so you could very easily see your website being punished for this aggressive link building strategy.
A better approach is to start off slowly in the first couple of weeks. So a good approach would be to get backlinks from a variety of sources so that it appears that your website is growing naturally. So you could submit your website to a few directories and start writing an article or two and submitting them to various different article directories. You could also join various forums relating to your niche and write a few useful posts, which obviously contain a link to your website in the sig file.
What you do not want to do is to buy links from high pagerank sites, or worst still buy site-wide links from various websites. These links are not really natural for a site that's just been launched so if you do do this, then you may find your site being sandboxed or punished in some way, which will do more harm than good. You may then have to wait many months before your site gets any decent search engine rankings.
So the key point I want to make is that you should always build links gradually, at least to start off with. After a few months you can be a little more aggressive in order to obtain those high rankings, but you can't expect to be at the top of the rankings (and stay there) after just a couple of weeks.
