If you've found this article, I'm going to assume that you're researching the Nutrisystem diet and want to not only if it works, but how it works. I'll attempt to answer these questions in this article.
Quick Nutrisystem Overview / How It Works: A lot of people don't realize that this diet is really a low carb model. Although the company prefers to use phrases like friendly "glycemic index," and "good carbs," in essence the foods in this diet are designed to be high in protein and low in carbohydrates. I consider this to be a good thing because low carb diets are generally very effective for most people. It's just sticking with them that's hard, but this diet does make that process a lot easier.
In my opinion, Nutrisystem is much easier than other low carbohydrate diets like South Beach or Atkins because the foods are actually quite good and many snacks, carb like foods and desserts choices are included. You don't have to constantly eat only meat, eggs and fats at all. In fact, you'll be eating pretty decent tasting food choices like pizza, muffins, chocolate cake, ravioli, fajitas, cereal, pancakes, etc.
The foods come prepackaged and most are very convenient, only requiring a few minutes to assemble. There are over 130 choices and most are better than you might expect. I find that some are actually quite good. You eat five times per day and this really helps with hunger once you get used to this. You can add your own healthful choices (salad, yogurt, fruit, etc) to your meals, but you never have to tally points or calories. As long as you eat the foods provided and use the guidelines provided for your additions, that's all that is really required.
The company provides free workout videos and motivation with every order. There are no centers to visit since you order the food online. The company also offers free weight loss counseling which I think is really a huge plus and good value, as Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers offer this service, but are also much more expensive because of it.
Celebrity Endorsements: Nutrisystem is sometimes known as the celebrity diet because a long list of Hollywood stars have acted as celebrity spokespersons. Examples are Jillian Barberie (who famously wore a bikini in the ads), Tori Spelling, Danielle Fishel, Marie Osmond, Dan Marino, Joey Fatone, and most recently Jodi Sweeten (Full House after giving birth to a daughter). This diet is sort of known as the celebrity mom diet, as many of the female celebrities (Tori Spelling, Jillian Barberie, and now Jodi Sweeten) lose about forty pounds on it postpartum.
So, Does Nutrisystem Really Work: I spend a lot of time on weight loss forums and I can say from my research and my own experience that this weight loss system / diet absolutely works if you use it as directed and you stick with it. There are countless success stories both on the company's site and all over the web (including regular people who aren't celebrities.) This diet is well designed to help you consume less calories, fat and carbs. If you eat the food provided, you'll automatically achieve this and if you add in even a tiny bit of exercise and make use of the DVDs you're given, your results should be even better. Typical weight loss on this diet seems to be about 2-5 pounds per week. To get on the upper end of this range (closer to 5 pounds) I believe that at least some exercise is needed, but two pounds per week certainly isn't too shabby either. Over time, that would definitely add up.
