1. The clothes are made with blood

7% of all worldwide exports are in textiles. In 2000, consumers spent $1,000,000,000,000 on clothing. Thats one trillion dollars. This industry is a very big part of the world economy with a lot of money at stake. It has built all this wealth on a historical dependence on cheap labor. Even though a lot of the developing countries in the supply chain have minimum wage laws, in most cases it is lower than a realistic minimum wage, such that even though the industry provides many relatively low skilled jobs it still makes it nearly impossible for the workers to escape the poverty cycle.

2. The clothes are made to die

The advent of massclusivity and fast fashion - has driven cheap clothes onto the market, and this has had to be done at the expense of quality. Designer clothes arent as expensive as they used to be, but then they are not as durable. But ultimately it comes down to the customer, the customer who continues to buy substandard product without any retaliation.

4. The labels give nothing back

Very few labels have established social responsibility programs. Given that in the typical production life cycle, the fashion industry causes more damage to the environment than any other there is a big built-in responsibility to make up for. With only a handful of exceptions, that opportunity to be a socially conscious fashion brand has not been taken.

5. The brand has been sold

Ask yourself now, these following questions of your favorite fashion brand. What does brand x stand for? What are the principles of brand x? Answer the question in your mind of why do I like brand x? without using the words, nice, cheap or I dont know. Got it? A sense of any real brand differentiation other than your portable social-proof elements i.e. because Lindsay Lohan was wearing it in a picture, has been lost. In a mass distribution model, fashion houses care less for creating a relationship with their customers. It seems that they would forget that, the real value is not the customer herself but the relationship with that customer.

A16 Restaurant Review

As you enter A 16, named for Autostrada 16, a road
that spans from Naples to Tavari, you're greeted by
subtle greenery, rich chocolate wood, and a dozen or so
coveted high-back chairs situated at the Italian marble
bar and bay windows that look out onto Chestnut
Street (a great perch for people watching). A colorful
floor-to-ceiling chalkboard displays the pride of A 16,
its wide selection of wines.

The idea for the establishment was born from
a trip to the Campania region of Italy, where coowner
Shelley Lindgren fell in love with the region's
food and wine. Lindgren, local attorney
Victoria Libin, and chef Nate Appleman teamed up
to ensure that the grapes complemented the southern
Italian cuisine.

The Campania region, dubbed oenetria or land of wine,
by the ancient Greeks, has a long history of great
wines. First up, Lindgren poured a glass of Clelia Romano,
Fiano di Avellino, 2005-a dry white, with hints
of honey, almonds, and evergreen and a smokiness
from the still-present volcanic soil of the Mount Vesuvius
eruption, which destroyed Pompeii in 79 A.D., literally
creating a rich history in the wine itself.

We also tasted the Cantine del Taburno, Falanghina,
2005-a light, crisp, aromatic wine with hints of pear
and mango; the Benito Ferrara, Greco di Tufo, 2005, a
70-year-old vine Greco, grown from limestone "Tufaceous"
soil, also found in the Loire Valley in Sancerre
and Chablis-with stone fruits like white peaches,
nectarines, and a dry finish; and the I Favati, Taurasi,
2004-red currants, with lush fruits like plum and
cherry, medium tannins.

A 16's knowledgeable staff serves forty wines by the
glass and half-bottle carafes (assuring that no bottle
stays open for too long), mainly priced between
$8 and $14 per glass. The selections change
often with some staples of Campania there to stay.
Some of the varietals of Campania include Falanghina,
Fiano, Greco (whites), Casavecchia, Aglianico, and
Piedirosso (red).

How to Make an Interactive Matchbook Scrapbook

I made this match book scrapbook for on the front of my grand daughters newborn album. I used this matchbook scrapbook on the front cover and added a magnet to the back of it and a metal embellishment to the album front cover so that is would stay attached.

I used a matchbook (matches removed of course!) as the template and for measurements. I added an interactive photo insert strip that is interactive. It opens up, pulls out and flips open!

I used pattern paper on the outside and solid on the inside with just a tad bit of ribbon as decoration. The photo insert inside is interactive. It opens up, pulls out and flips open!

The inserted piece pulls out to reveal head-shot-size photos! It shows the baby's family. The mother and father head shots current age, but these are on a tab that opens up to show them at a younger age.

And close it up like a "matchbook" and it is darling, beautiful and will be certain to grab attention of many and all! A great grand parent gift, or for school friends or how about one in your own purse to show off the loves of your life!

These aren't very hard to make, just kind of time consuming, but they are certainly worth it. This is my first one and it turned out pretty good, and I didn't have any instructions - just saw a completed one once and figured it out. It is that easy.

This is one was made with a regular size matchbook as the template, but I have done the same thing, only enlarged the template - adding about 2 inches all around. Worked out great!

Advertising is All About Telling Lies!

I took advertising as my career. And for about 20 years I enjoyed working as a creative copywriter and visualizer, won couple of awards but, one fine day I realized (was it too late for me?...No!), that advertising is all about telling lies. I have convincing justification for this statement and there are other reason that supports it too.

First let us take an ad in which a beautiful film actress or brand ambassador- a celebrity, has a soap in her hand which has attractive package design. She says to the reader or the audience" It is the secret of my beauty." isn't it a complete lie? If that was true all the people using that soap would look beautiful. They say it is called "positioning." But do you think its true? No it isn't.

Now take another ad in which a film actor or a celebrity says " I prefer to drive only Honda Bike." Now in reality he commutes in a chauffeur driven imported car, and sometimes in private plane. And these celebrities get paid for telling lies! And the amount paid to them is handsome. There was this billboard on highway on which a king size cigarette ad slogan said, "You Have Come a Long Way Baby!" This "unique selling proposition" was supported by a glamorous model in bikini with long legs!

I have read perhaps all the so called important books on advertising and first I was impressed by the commercial art. But now I think they are useless. In one of the book the bottom line was, "If an ad does not sell the product, it is not a creative ad." So its all about selling products and services of a company in whatever way it is possible. When an advertising agency gets a new account it never checks the quality of products because all they want is business from that company. The agencies efforts are more into pleasing the top management in whatever way they can. The consumer of the product is never considered!

There are other sensitive reasons why I hate advertising. Advertising is the girl friend of media. Media as you know publishes 90% news that are negative. For instance, terrorism, murders, rapes, bank robbery, political scams and so on. If they don't print negativity it cannot sell. People have become so much addicted to newspapers that for some it is not even possible to go for a natural call without it! To print all these useless newspapers and magazines millions of trees are cut down every year. The print and electronic media earns huge profits from releasing of ads, and absurdly sometimes those ads are called "creative" ads. In other words all the negativity in the world is spread by the media which is supported mainly by advertising world.

Now comes the most important fact. You know that 60% of our hard earned income goes to middlemen like retailer, wholesaler, stockist, C & F agent, transporters...and so on? This chain is supported by advertising and marketing. The fact is that out of 60% the advertising takes away 35% of our hard earned income. And yet surprisingly people love to watch ads on TV! And read newspapers.

I have been reading newspapers since 30 years and they have not made any difference to my life. I am glad I have left advertising "creativity". There cannot be anything creative about it. Its all about telling lies lies and just lies.

The once great footballer is said to be joining the house along with his other fellow celebrities, I do not think that this will harm Ian Wright's career at all, he will still be a football commentator and pundit unless he does something very stupid.

There are many more potential names such as Verne Troyer and MP Lembit Opik, but whatever happens I am sure that we will see a great show develop and it will attract a lot of viewers and controversy just as it does every year.

No Tattoos at School

Okay, I will admit I'm a little perturbed this morning. I read an article this morning stating that a school is having a board meeting sometime this week regarding making a policy about their students HAVING to cover up their tattoos. However, there is some sweet justice to this it seems that the principle of the school doesn't necessarily have a problem with his students having these tattoos, as long as they are not vulgar or obscene images. He stated that the decision for his students to have tattoos are up to the student and their parents not him. It was stated in this article that tattoos can fall under the dress code and if something is considered disruptive then the principle can take any kind of action he wishes.

I think this is all hogwash. I mean schools make up ridiculous rules that students have to follow. Like for instance when I was in high school you were not allowed to wear tank tops. Yes, you heard me. We are not allowed to wear tank tops. I mean what possible reason could the school have for you not wearing a tank top? This is kind of how I feel about the whole tattoo thing. The students are not hurting anyone and I don't really see how the tattoo can be disruptive. Yeah some students may stare at it and ask the student who has it about it but after that nothing is going to be said about the tattoo. In my opinion I think its just parents that have nothing else better to do and for some strange reason are living in the dark ages, because tattoos are ACCEPTED in this day and time, so get over it.

Knitting with a Machine? Beware of the Twist!

When you buy a knitting machine, the yarn that you knit with is just as important as the machine itself.

The yarn composition (natural or synthetic), the degree of twist and the resulting knitted texture are all-important to the success of your finished garments.

Very few knitting machines are bought without a certain amount of trepidation. There is always that feeling that learning how to use one will prove too difficult but, in fact, most anyone can learn to use the modern knitting machine.

The problems that most new machine knitters encounter are more often due to the yarn or pattern used than to the machine itself. Its sadly true that being able to use the machine competently will never make up for working with a poor pattern or an inappropriate yarn.

Lots of knitters only need to see '4-ply' written on a pattern and they assume that any old 4-ply yarn will knit up just as well. Oh no!

Think of a 4-ply baby yarn compared with a 4-ply crepe. Both are termed 4-ply but the low-twist baby yarn is soft, while the high-twist crepe is very firm. Theres little similarity between these two types of yarn, even when the fibre content is the same and this is due to the extent of twist applied by the yarn manufacturer.

Twist, texture and tension are inseparable. The degree of twist will always affect the texture and this, in turn, will affect the firmness or softness of the finished fabric.

Twist and texture affect the tension swatch. Twist (or lack of it!) will determine the shape of the stitch which, in turn, will affect the width and length of the tension swatch.

A firm high-twist yarn will produce a stitch of a certain size and shape, depending on the machine tension setting or, in hand-knitting, the size of needle used. This type of stitch is not likely to change its size or shape very much.

On the other hand, the stitches knitted in a soft low-twist yarn may fall into a mixture of shapes, depending on how the work is pulled and pressed.

These factors can have a huge effect on the tension swatch, making yarn substitution quite a risk for an inexperienced knitter!

Yarn is generally sold by weight but its always worth looking at the cone label or ball band to check the yarn length in metres/yards. Going back to the baby yarn and crepe example, a 1oz (25gm) ball of baby yarn is likely to contain a longer length of yarn than the same weight of crepe. This is because the crepe has been tightly twisted to give a firm non-pill yarn.

Twisting not only changes the texture, it also shortens the length.

Look at some hand-knitting patterns for crepe yarns and youll see they usually need several extra balls to complete the garment and this, of course, makes it more expensive to knit them!

Cruise Speakers - Status As a Minor Celebrity & Free Gifts

I have noticed that when cruising free cruise as an enrichment speaker, I am often treated as a minor celebrity and end up getting lots of little extras that other passengers don't. First, you'll be recognized around the ship by the people who attend your programs. Also, if you have a book for sale onboard people will approach you and ask you to autograph it. This is pretty heady the first couple times it happens to you.

This onboard celebrity effect is often accentuated if the cruise line video tapes your presentations for replaying ship-wide on closed circuit television programming. Some of the lines do this. In fact, some of the lines will interview you your first night onboard to promote your upcoming programs. This is really cool and always substantially boosts your attendance.

It doesn't end there though. Many times the cruise lines will give you little perks and gifts. For example, I have had a $125 bottle of Champagne delivered to my cabin (see picture left). I have been given expensive pen sets, shirts, coolers, koozies, water proof key/money holders and leather luggage tags. Kenny - a Movie Review

Kenny is an Australian produced movie starring little known actor, Shane Jacobson. It is a quirky movie centering around the character of Kenny Smyth, an overweight divorced father of one. He works for a company called "Splashdown" delivering portable toilets to all sorts of events including the Melbourne Cup.

To say that there is a lot of toilet humor in this move would be an understatement. It is a scatalogical tale like no other. Every septic challenge is met head on by Kenny, who has a surprisingly positive outlook on life given his occupation and the fact that his father, in the movie, is an obnoxious character who does little but project his negative personality on all and sundry.

Eventually, as the movie meanders along, Kenny finds himself at the Mecca of waste management, the "International Pumper and Cleaner Expo" in Nashville Tennessee. Here Kenny strikes up several friendships with an attractive air-hostess and a Japanese businessman, the latter with a surprising consequence.

Kenny chugs along without reaching any truly great heights. It is filmed in the style of a roving documentary. Every joke about poo is told through the speech impedimented Kenny who comes across as a very likeable character.

At just under two hours the movie is about one quarter too long. It could have been more punchy if it were edited to a crisper 90 minutes. There were several scenes that added little including the camping scene with Kenny, his pony-tailed brother and their father. The wandering expo scenes and Melbourne Cup scenes were also too long.

In all, Kenny was an amusing movie of average merit. My score... 5 out of 10. Others seem to rate it higher but I was expecting more considering the rave reviews that much of the media and others had given it.

The World of Funny and Strange Awards

Everyone loves to win an award but sometimes you want to be careful of what you wish for because you may just get it. Winning an award is always fun and it is nice to be recognized. Maybe you won employee of the month at work or perhaps your civic work caused your community to recognize you with an outstanding citizen award. Between the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, and the People's Choice Awards there are hundreds of award winners every year in Hollywood and that does not count things like the Kids Choice Movie Awards or the MTV Movie Awards either. But as good as Hollywood can be at patting itself on the back there are always Hollywood outsiders who are willing to let Hollywood know that not every movie is an award winner. The desire to keep Hollywood in its place has spawned some funny trophies and award shows and the top funny Hollywood award show of them all is the Razzies.

The Razzies is short for the Golden Raspberry Award and it is given every year for the worst actors and worst movies Hollywood put out for the previous year. The trophy is a large golden raspberry and, needless to say, very few Hollywood celebrities show up to the ceremony each year to collect their award. In recent years Hollywood has been continually accused of having no worthwhile movies coming out and that has caused an increase in the media exposure of the Razzies and its accompanying ceremony every year. Pacific Grocery and Restaurant Oceanside California Review

Whether you live in the City of Oceanside or are planning on traveling to Oceanside in the near future, you might or might not be aware of Pacific Grocery and Restaurant in Oceanside, California. They offer Indian Groceries as well so you can purchase your food there and take it home and cook it.

In addition they just started offering Chicken Fajita Burritos this week. And if you live around this area, make sure you check out their produce. I always end up purchasing an avocado, tomato or bananas almost every week. They have a nice front patio with two large tables so you can eat outside with your friends. Inside they have six smaller tables you can eat at.

It's the perfect place to stop by if you're going to the beach or coming back from the beach. Tonight I just came back from there with a trophy, a full gallon of milk for only $3.99. Most people think just because a place is small that you can't get lower prices than a major supermarket. Shopping for groceries and eating here has been a wonderful experience, at least for me it was. Sam is the owner and is real nice, and they take good care of me while I'm here.

China King - A Dim Sum Delight in Chandler

Today we felt as if we were back in China, or perhaps San Francisco's authentic Chinatown. Instead we were in Chandler, Arizona, feasting on a favorite lunch: Dim Sum. We're not sure how many of you have experienced Dim Sum. We always find it special as the assortment of dishes are rolled around the restaurant and you pick out the items you want. No guesswork, it is all there in front of you, inviting you to taste and enjoy. We have our favorites, and today we added some new dishes.

The Hill team, joined by several friends, enjoyed a lunch of crispy shrimp dumplings, steamed BBQ buns, crispy egg rolls, tasty spare ribs, shrimp Shy Mai, and Hun Sui Gok. The fresh bright green vegetables that accompanied each tender morsel melted in our mouths. Norm was partial to the Lotus Seed Jin Dui, Baked Egg Tart, and Baked Egg Custard Buns. They satisfied his sweet tooth. Of course, food lovers can also order chow mein, duck, noodles, fried rice and a large variety of sea food, all fresh, including lobster.

When we return, perhaps tomorrow, we will order the seafood in a clay pot, or the sizzling plate of scallops and shrimps. All this with prompt and friendly service, and the joy of seeing families enjoying a meal together as they sit around a large round table. Wherever we have lived, except for Boston, New York and San Francisco, we have found it difficult to find delicious, authentic, Chinese food, especially Dim Sum, at such a reasonable price. Now we can indulge. We urge you to try this treasure and would enjoy knowing if you enjoyed it as much as we did.

End of Days Movie Review

Arnie takes on his toughest foe in the Devil in "End Of Days". In many ways, this is a cut above most of Arnold Schwarzenegger's B-grade action films, and it definitely looks and feels spectacular, but there's also something not quite fresh on the "Devil takes over the world" story. It might have been that The Devil's Advocate was released at around a similar time, or that Devil films have been done so many times, but this film is more or less a well executed, action version of films you've seen before. That's not to say it's great to watch, but if you're expecting anything more you'll probably be disappointed. For Arnie fans this will likely satisfy as he gets to use his trademark weaponry throughout the piece, but unfortunately Arnie works best when he speaks less and he has quite a bit of dialogue in this film. The supporting cast are excellent, particularly Robin Tunney, Kevin Pollack, and Gabriel Byrne's extremely sinister turn as the Devil. Overall, this is a film that tries really hard to be a cut above the rest but doesn't quite make it.

As a star vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger, this is actually a darker, more serious film for Arnie and his fans. He's just as wooden as ever but anyone who enjoys an Arnie film will tell you that if you go to see one of his films for the acting than you're missing the point. He does manage to deliver on all the action elements, but also manages to hold his own once again on screen, and actually puts one of his best 'performances' in to this film (although Terminator is still obviously the best). He's ably assisted by comic Kevin Pollack who does much to elevate the material between their characters to a more colourful level with his satiricial wit and presence. Newcomer Robin Tunney also does well in giving a youthful innocence to the piece which contrasts quite nicely with Arnie's rugged appearance.

Gabriel Byrne is perhaps the best part of this film. Rather than create a Devil that operates through shades of grey, Byrne's devil is a nasty piece of work, and there's no mincing around. He wants what he wants and if he doesn't get it you'll die, and you'll die gruesomely. He has a magnetic quality that makes him intriguing to watch. Unfortunately, the script lifts dialogues from early films, particularly "The Devil's Advocate" where Byrne gives a speech about what God is really like which is very, very similar to Al Pacino's speech in the other film. The only difference is that Byrne delivers it was a sense of bubbling rage and anger, whereas Pacino was having fun with it. Nevertheless, Byrne gives quite a scary performance in this film and does much to contribute to the thrills and horror present in the piece.

This film looks really good. You could watch this film just to appreciate the shots. They're rich, colourful, dramatic and atmospheric. Director Peter Hyams was reportedly going for a Renaissance type look to the pictures and he certainly succeeded in this regard. At times the look of the film recalls films like "The Exorcist" which really tap in to our basic fears. The soundtrack, featuring a creepy musical score does much to add to this atmosphere as well. From a technical standpoint, this film is extremely impressive. Unfortunately, the script does let the craft down by not providing a terribly unique approach to the material. It's only the execution and the charisma of the cast that makes this story better than what it is. I will say however that the tie-in with the end of the millennium is quite nice, especially with one in the film: "Three nights New York. Three nights until every computer fails." It was great to recall the hysteria around the end of the millennium through moments like this.

"End Of Days" is an entertaining, extremely well shot action film that tries hard to be more than the sum of its parts but ultimately doesn't get there, resulting in a film that's generic in nature.

Book Queries That Get Noticed

Writing a good query letter shows book editors your ability to think precisely, to use language efficiently and to advance your inquiry in a seemingly effortless but elegant manner.

Before you write a query letter, study the book market to learn which publishers may be interested in your subject. It is a waste of your time and the editor's if you send your fishing book query letter to a publisher that only publishes romance novels.

A tightly constructed query letter may consist of the following parts: 1) an opening sentence that describes your book's category, such as sports, cooking, romance, mystery, how-to, travel or other; 2) a statement describing the premise of your book; 3) a brief list of the especially good credits that qualify you to write the book (no lengthy biographies, please); 4) a list of your books or book contributions; 5) a statement of how your book will distinguish itself from similar titles; and 6) a formal closing: Thank you for your attention and your name.

Do not use paragraph indentations in your query letter. Single spaced paragraphs and double spacing in between are standard. By no means use a fancy hard-to-read font. Easy-to-read fonts like Times Roman or Arial, twelve point, are best. If you wish to send the letter via email, create it in MS WORD and attach it to an email note so the editor has your email address for ease of reply. How Has Children's TV Changed Over the Years?

I'm still relatively young myself, but I've still noticed a huge change in children's television over the years here in the UK. Television used to be the main source of entertainment for many kids but their viewing habits have changed dramatically in recent years.

When I was young we basically had two children's TV channels to choose from when we got home from school - BBC1 and ITV. Both these channels dedicated a few hours of TV entirely to children. Nowadays, however, although the BBC still remains largely the same, if you allow your kids to tune into ITV they will probably be treated to one of the many detective shows that they now show in the afternoons such as Inspector Morse or Midsomer Murders.

Despite this, however, you could argue that kids now have more programs to watch because there are entire digital TV channels dedicated to showing children's TV shows. This is particularly true if you have satellite TV because there are lots of children's channels on there that are on pretty much all day long. In my day we had maybe an hour in the early morning and then a few hours in the afternoon and that was it. The rest of the time we had to find our own amusement or get on with our homework.

Of course technology has evolved dramatically in the last twenty years or so and some would argue that TV is no longer a large part of children's lives any more. Indeed a lot of kids probably prefer texting their friends on their mobile phones, playing on their games consoles, listening to their iPods, or using the internet where they can interact with both their real friends and the thousands of 'friends' they have on Facebook and MySpace.

There are also a wide number of different websites online that will keep them entertained much more than traditional TV can. For instance many kids will prefer to spend several hours watching videos on YouTube than watching some of the more lacklustre kids shows on television.

So overall children's TV hasn't really changed that much over the years since my youth. The programs nowadays are more professionally produced and they can benefit from from improvements in technology, but the content is largely the same. The major change has come from children's viewing habits in general.

With the advancements in technology, TV is fast becoming somewhat of a dated form of entertainment, particularly for older children, but thankfully I think it still has a role in educating and entertaining our young children in their formative years (before they have discovered the internet, iPods and mobile phones).
