Muay Thai For Physical Fitness

Mixed martial arts leagues such as the UFC have exploded in popularity over the last couple of years. With the increased exposure in the United States the national sport of Thailand has become a huge hit with MMA fighters and those who aspire to become one. What has been lost however is the benefit that Muay Thai can serve to otherwise ordinary members of society.

Muay Thai was originally developed as a means of combat in Thailand thousands of years ago. As the methods have evolved the sport took shape and now the practice is primarily utilized by fighters for the purpose of competition. Many people who wouldn't be as familiar with the sport may interpret it as brutal and bloodthirsty. In reality however the sport has deep traditions in respect and sportsmanship and could be enjoyed by all.

Joining a Muay Thai gym to improve your physical fitness can be an education and rewarding experience for those who dare. The workout is grueling but exercising both your strength and aerobic capacity. Unlike other methods of working out it is also more engaging than a usual treadmill workout or lifting weights repetitively. The added bonus to joining such a sport is also the ability to defend yourself if it ever came to that point. The most important aspect of selecting a Muay Thai gym is to ensure that your goals align with the mission of the school. Some schools are set up to exclusively train fighters for actual competition, others simply exist as a different form of an aerobic class.

The best one to join is a school that does train competitors but welcomes new students with open arms. Although difficult to find it would be well worth it since getting hurt simply discourages new students from continuing. Once you begin the training will be like nothing you've ever done before but in time your skills will build and you will notice your body beginning to gain strength and endurance. Consistency is definitely the key here as even taking a week off can lead to a noticeable decrease in your ability to endure throughout the class. Techniques here are also important as many of the kicks and punches require precise techniques to pull off with maximum force.

Of course if you are not competing this does not matter as much but it still is helpful since it can decrease the likelihood of injury. Eventually you may be asked to spar against a partner or even join in a competition. These steps are optional but often once you begin to realize the potential of the sport you may want to join in on these activities even if that was not your original intent. The bottom line is to do whatever makes you the most comfortable. Remember this sport is not limited to any gender or physical body type; all people are equally welcome and potentially able to excel in the sport.

The most important thing to remember is that Muay Thai is an excellent way of working out in a unique and engaging environment. It doesn't require staring at a wall while on a treadmill for an hour nor does it require endlessly lifting weights in a dark room. Those activities can still be utilized to vary your exercise schedule but Muay Thai allows you to try something a little different and possibly more fun. So don't be terrified by what you see on television, give your local instructor a call and sign up for an introductory session. You won't be disappointed!
