I've noticed how few people talk about stretching, and when they do so they don't deem it as too important. In my opinion, this is very wrong. The loosening and stretching of the muscles should be one of the main factors of an individual's day; not just in the morning as soon as one steps out of bed, rather it should be a repeated action during the whole day. Stretching is important to our body, as it increases the elasticity of our muscles, decreasing this way the chances of shocks.
Try and set 15 minutes aside during the morning before breakfast and slowly start to stretch your back, legs, abdominals and arms. Don't bounce, rather try and reach the maximum stretch without feeling too much pain and keep that position for 30 seconds or a minute. Remember to take deep breaths. This way you will already begin your day in a very good way, with oxygen-filled blood flowing through your muscles. Remember during the day to get up from your chair and stretch for 5 minutes... this way you'll body will know you haven't forgotten about it.
I stretch every morning for 15-20 minutes, and I immediately feel my body aware and ready to start the day. A shower, followed by a rich and healthy breakfast, and nothing will stop me. As soon as a have a spare minute in between my commitments I try to do some light stretching and when I go to the gym, before starting muscle training, I always prepare a good stretching session. Even as I'm writing this article, I've got a stretched leg on a chair.
At the end of the road, in order to increase the quality of life one must perform small habits every day. We should not concentrate on giving up, but rather on adding something. Let's ask ourselves "what is missing in order to...", rather than "I must give this up, if I want..."
Let's add some stretching to our day, a nice walk when we have a bit of time, let's add healthy foods to our daily meals, rather than deprive ourselves of our favourites, and if they're really fat and fried let's try to limit their consumption the best we can; we will appreciate them much more the next time we taste them.
Always listen to qualified instructors, both to find out the right stretching movements and for weight lifting or heart training. Our body is unique, so to know the right types of exercises and how to execute them depending on the muscle groups. You'll feel less fatigue and most importantly you'll avoid doing yourself more harm than good.
