In this day and age, there is a backlash against synthetic, unnatural, and drug based products and a major shift toward the natural.
And I personally think this is a good thing, as natural skincare is best. However, we must also be careful. Nowadays a lot of products tout the "natural" label when they are not, or will say "organic," just hoping to use the buzzword to increase their sales without ever really specifying what they mean.
Also, we must remember that science is not a bad thing. We may want natural skincare products, but we'd be foolish to ignore what science can do to make the products as best as they can be, as long as that science does not come with substances that will cause us potential harm.
The kind of substances you don't want are anything with parabens and fragrances in them. Unfortunately, a lot of skin care products have these in them. They make the cream itself smell nice and who wouldn't want that. Unfortunately, a lot of these parabens and fragrances are known carcinogens.
You must remember that natural skincare products are best, simply because anything you put onto your skin is literally "eaten" by your body. What I mean is that it passes through the pores and into your bloodstream and tissues. If your skincare product contains these substances, you are slowly poisoning yourself...and will do long term harm to your skin.
Now, when it comes to effectiveness, you want science on your side because science can give us a high potency and also pioneer processes by which natural substances can be more readily-absorbed.
If, for example, there is a natural substance that is proven to have benefits for the skin, then extracts of that substance can be produced, which is a hyper concentrated version....and therefore, give you much greater benefits.
If you take any type of nutritional or herbal supplement, the same concept here applies. The supplements, particularly with the herbs, are made from extracts which are much higher in potency.
One such natural substance you should look for, and which I personally use, is called phytessence wakame, which is an extract that comes from a special type of Japanese sea kelp. In Japan this sea kelp is also consumed as part of a healthy diet, but now extracts are used in some elite skincare products because of the amazing benefits phytessence wakame has shown when used on the skin.
Increased suppleness and smoothness of the skin, as examples, has been shown to develop on human volunteers.
Other natural skincare ingredients like these are covered at my website.
